Pond De-Silting and Eel Relocation Success with Pipe Vision

In partnership with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland System Management (ASM), Pipe Vision successfully delivered a multi-day pond de-silting project as part of the 2024/25 Stormwater Pond Renewals Programme.
The project focused on restoring pond functionality and improving stormwater performance while taking extra care to protect native wildlife and meet environmental compliance requirements.
Our De-Silting and Environmental Protection Approach
From the outset, our team recognised this was more than a standard de-silting job. Early signs of native eel activity meant our methodology had to be adjusted to ensure safe and responsible wildlife relocation before de-watering could begin.
Pipe Vision carried out:
Controlled de-watering using a submersible pump, ensuring only clean water entered the outlet
Relocation of native eels using fyke nets and a forebay as a temporary habitat
Installation and reinforcement of silt fences to manage runoff and protect surrounding areas
Hydro excavation to remove built-up pond sludge with precision
Responsible disposal of pond waste at Vision Environmental, our recycling plant
Throughout the operation, our crews remained vigilant, continuously relocating eels as water levels dropped and ensuring that environmental impact was kept to an absolute minimum.
Overcoming Challenges
A sudden downpour mid-project refilled the pond and temporarily halted progress. To stay on track, our team re-established de-watering systems, reinforced containment areas, and brought in additional hydro crews to accelerate progress.
Despite these unexpected conditions, we maintained a strong environmental focus, ensuring that silt and sludge were safely managed and did not enter the surrounding ecosystem or nearby motorway.
Results
Over 9 truckloads of silt removed and responsibly disposed
Multiple native eels relocated and returned to the pond
By-product area reshaped and secured to prevent runoff
Site left clean and operational for future stormwater needs
